Just 40 km from Shigatse, at an altitude of 4000 meters, the environment around Singma and its neighbouring villages is particularly dry and rocky. In Central Tibet there is a dramatic scarcity of water – the rain is concentrated in the short summer months, resulting in long periods of time when people have to rely on stagnant and polluted water sources which has grave consequences upon their health. The villagers survive by tending livestock and on the meagre harvests they back-breakingly produce from this mountainous environment. Often the grain they produce is only enough to last half the year. Because there is no water for irrigation, the cultivation of fruit and vegetables is unthinkable; this has resulted in a diet seriously lacking in essential vitamins and minerals. The land, already poor and dry, is also affected by heavy erosion that leaves it increasingly unsuitable for agricultural use. Trees are rare due to the altitude and severe climatic conditions. Thousands of trees have already been planted around this area but without a good source of water their survival is precarious.
However, in front of Singma Village, some meters underground is a water source that could change the lives of the people in these villages as well as the environment. After drilling 65 meters into the dry ground engineers have found a source of water that can be tapped in order to sustain the villagers in their daily activities as well as revitalize the local environment.
This hidden water, seen as a miracle by the people who saw it gushing out from below the ground, will remain hidden and out of reach unless we can raise the 20,000 euro necessary to install the generator and tanks, as well as pay for the work.
